Week 5 - 3D Design

Task 1 - Challenge assumptions

During this time we had three students present their 3D Design concepts for 2 minutes, we then discussed and challenged these ideas for 3 minutes.

Idea 1: Paul Myatt Steampunk Computer

Paul takes a computer screen, strips unnecessary items away, reconfigures it to a portrait orientation and uses this to extend his home monitor.
Paul is motivated to use old technology in a useful way.

Discussion and challenges included:

• Is it safe, i.e. the exposed wires might be a problem
• Will you add things for the aesthetics of the product?
• Will the aesthetics also include the keyboard or tower?

Idea 2: Cherill Hopkins Helmet Cover

As detailed in my blogs I presented the work we have completed for the helmet cover, it's purpose, design ideas and the experts we have spoken to.

Discussion and challenges included:

• How much does it cost?
• Will the helmet still look like a helmet so the police don't pull you over for not wearing a helmet.

Idea 3: Queenie presents Little Brownie, Little Trip

A 10 spread children's book featuring the adventures of the little brown bear.

Discussion and challenges included:

• What age is the book for?
• It would be a good idea to trial the story line with children and parents, maybe at the City Library kids story time
• Will printing be a problem?
• Maybe Journey would be a better word than trip

Research:

Looking at assumptions and challenges for our helmet cover:

Assumptions:

• People need somewhere to carry items like an MP3 player and cash
• People would be willing to pay for a cover
• People would like to colour co-ordinate their helmet to their outfit
• People would like to change the look of their helmet without buying another helmet
• Teams need a cover to distinguish them
• People would be happy to buy a cover instead of a shirt when distinguishing teams
• People would be happy for a small surface area of promotion, i.e. helmet cover instead of a t-shirt

Challenge:

• The helmet cover needs to cost substantial less than a new helmet.
• Helmet covers need to be visually appealing - show how ugly some are, how it's the one thing you are wearing that is out of place
• Need to show how an MP3 player in your pocket is a problem
• Show how a team, even with an event shirt on still needs to be recognisable as a team
• Shirts come in different sizes are harder to transport because of bulk, harder to be re-used .. a helmet cover is one size fits all, can easily carry for distribution
• the helmet cover address so many problems, a video for each might be appropriate

Here is someone with the same bright idea but they have added it to a cap. The video might provide some inspiration for the videos we would like to add to our web site for the helmet cover.
